In its 25 years of operations, the Wilbraham Soccer Club has grown into a major force within the Pioneer Valley Soccer League and become central to the fabric of the Town of Wilbraham. During this period, the club has grown from 2-3 teams to the 25 teams and over 370 players participating in 2002/03. We have witnessed club developed players excel in both the high school and the college ranks. And perhaps most gratifying has been the explosion in interest in the girl’s teams and the associated success we witnessed at all levels.
All of this has been accomplished through an excellent partnership between the town, school district and the strong core of volunteers that have driven the results of the club. There is no better example of this excellent partnership than the aggressive building project we have undertaken to develop the new soccer complex on Stony Hill Road. The project is being run by dedicated club volunteers who act in every role imaginable, from architect, to surveyor, to fundraiser to general contractor. These volunteers contribute incredible amounts of their time and energy, but also a tremendous amount of individual "sweat labor" to the project. The project resides on land owned by the town and the town selectmen have fully supported the project. And, the School District has been our partner in insuring that fields are available for continued club play while we finish this complex. All in all, upon its completion in 2002/03, we will wind up with a soccer complex that is one of the class facilities in Western Massachusetts, and something we can all look to with pride well into the future.
As we move to the future, the club has undertaken the responsibilities of better communications with parents and interested parties and increasing the level of organization, management and volunteer involvement in the club. This handbook, along with our new web site (www.falconsoccer.org), are intended to act as a central information source for those involved with the club. Most importantly, the handbook contains the Wilbraham Soccer Club Code of Responsibility, detailing expectations and modeled behavior for all those who participate in club activities. The Board of Directors believes that this "Code" is a cornerstone for future success of the club. Its goal is to directly address many of the issues that arise in youth sports in today’s society.
As President, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who have made this club so successful over the years and strongly encourage each of you to get involved in club activities. We have the opportunity to make the soccer experience for the youth of Wilbraham even more outstanding than it has been in the past. The opportunities to pitch in are many…please refer to the committee structure and club activities in succeeding pages for some ideas of where you can have an impact.
And finally, on behalf of the Board and I, thank you to the coaches, managers, players and parents. You have made this a great experience for all of us.
